Operation Easter Egg

Operation Easter Egg
German Plan For Sabotage Depots

A report on German Abwehr sabotage depots buried in France and Western Europe during 1944-45, from the Intelligence Bulletin, March 1946.

Only the overwhelming speed of the Allied drive through France foiled a German plan for extensive behind-the-lines sabotage. This "Operation Easter Egg" again illustrates the necessity for even the rearmost troops of an advancing army to remain on the alert.
In 1943 the imaginative German Intelligence Service concocted Operation Easter Egg (Ostereiaktion), an undertaking designed to establish small hidden depots of explosives and incendiaries in numerous caches strategically located in France, Holland, Belgium, and Western Germany. The German Intelligence Service intended to utilize these depots to supply German agents and native traitors. The mission of these saboteurs was to disrupt Allied rear communications after a German Army withdrawal from an area, thus aiding the German forces to recapture the lost territory.

Gulls and Speckled Green Eggs

Several types of dummy eggs were used to know behaviour and preferences of herring gulls about size and colour.

The picture shows the influence of egg size and colour on retrieval.
The numbers indicate the relative sizes of the dummy eggs used in tests.
Thus herrings gulls:
- prefer the larger of two eggs of the same colour
- prefer the speckled egg over an unspeckled egg of the same colour
- prefer green eggs over brown egg
Curiously, the gulls prefer a green background colour to the normal speckled brown colour of gull eggs, even if inferior size. For example, a size 5 green egg is more attractive than a size 6 natural coloured egg. Because they also prefer eggs with speckles, this leads to the surprising observation that a size 5 green speckled egg is more attractive than a size 8 natural coloured egg.

Not so Easy

In the tradition of Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg Painting) the egg must be empty before designing et dyeing.
What most of the online sites don't tell you, however, is that it all starts with a blown-out egg. Pinpricks at both ends and a gentle but steady blow will in fact force the yolky contents out through the teeny-tiny opening.

Unsuccessful egg-blowing caused by a weakened shell or careless technique can be somewhat embarassing.

Egg spring

Royal Copenhagen’s Easter eggs are a sign of spring

All who are enchanted by the delicate Easter eggs from Royal Copenhagen have something to look forward to. Keeping up the tradition of evocative Easter decorations, Royal Copenhagen’s floral designs welcome the spring and the sunshine.

Recognised worldwide for combining tradition and renewal, and for superb craftsmanship, Royal Copenhagen’s Easter decorations this year consist of four delicate new Easter eggs and a decorated goose egg in clear white porcelain. These lovely eggs are adorned with some of the prettiest motifs showing the symbols of spring: the forget-me-nots, white anemones and daffodils, or chaffinches and Great Tits in exquisite colours are poetic reminders that spring is on the way.

A historic tribute
The poetic floral decoration of the eggs is a direct reference to the unrivalled craftsmanship of Royal Copenhagen’s most distinguished design. The flower motifs have been taken from sources like the legendary Flora Danica service, one of the most exclusive in the world.
“Easter is a festival that marks the new life of spring, so it is a welcome opportunity to hang lovely decorations in our homes. That is why it is important to us that our Easter eggs are in keeping with our traditions as well as announcing that spring is just around the corner. But at the same time we want to pay tribute to Royal Copenhagen’s artistic heritage, so we have searched the archives to find the motifs we have chosen for this year’s Easter eggs,” says creative director Niels Bastrup.

Decorations with personality

With an idiom that neatly combines charming design with evocative tradition, Royal Copenhagen has created these small, poetic decorations for everyone wanting to give their homes a personal touch with an element of history. The delicate spring colours are carefully chosen to tone in and harmonise with collections from earlier years. The smaller eggs can be hung on twigs among the bursting buds or prettily arranged in bowls. The larger goose egg, which is about 10cm high, has a longer ribbon, and can be hung in a window or placed in a bowl or dish with the other porcelain eggs. The attractive bonbonnière can be used for chocolates or biscuits, as a flower-pot holder or as a decoration on the window sill. All prices are recommended retail prices.

Ode to the Stolen Children

By Leise Knowles.

"Stolen at birth.
Exploration of the many children all over the world who have been removed from their family for what ever reason.
As with much of my work, the story is personally driven from my family history, but this one was also informed by the stories from a beautiful old English lady, an immigrant to Australia who was, along with her siblings, taken from her mother in the 1930's.
It seems to be a practice that thrived both in the UK and continued on here for many many decades."
