Egg prices on coaster ride and Covid-19

The egg market has been impacted by panic buying and how a change in demand has created unprecedented issues for egg producers who supplied the foodservice sector.

Retail orders for eggs increased dramatically in the beginning weeks of COVID-19-related panic buying. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported for three consecutive weeks that egg inventories were down 10%, which is a rapid decline, especially when higher inventory numbers were expected with Easter approaching.

Refering to the Eight-Nation Alliance in response to the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1899-1901, five years after the first Sino-Japanese War.

The combination of extreme weather conditions, Western attempts at colonizing China and growing anti-imperialist sentiment fueled the movement.
The European great powers finally ceased their ambitions of colonizing China and this period marks the ceding of European great power interference in Chinese affairs.

Depuis Thompsonville, au nord de New York, Elliot Gibber, 63 ans, a assisté à la lente transformation de l’industrie de l’œuf et à son basculement vers le bio. Comme nombre de producteurs, il essaie d’adapter ses pratiques d’élevage pour répondre aux demandes de consommateurs en quête d’aliments sains. Douze ans après avoir monté sa société, Deb El Food, sur les restes d’une ferme familiale, il doit aussi répondre à un certain paradoxe, en commercialisant aussi uniquement des blancs d’œufs, de plus en plus prisés par des Américains inquiets du cholestérol contenu dans le jaune.

Conséquence de cet engouement, les prix des blancs d’œuf ont plus que triplé. La « livre » (454 g) qui coûtait 44 cents en janvier 2013 valait 1,19 dollar en mai (2014). Le catalyseur de cette tendance est la décision de chaînes de restauration rapide de ne plus proposer que des blancs d’œuf dans leurs menus intégrant des œufs. Depuis avril 2013, McDonald’s a introduit un sandwich, un McMuffin, qui n’est fait qu’aux blancs d’œuf, une décision suivie par ses rivaux Dunkin Donuts et Jack in The Box. « Tout le monde a suivi », explique Rick Brown, vice-président de Urner Barry, une société qui surveille les prix des produits alimentaires.

"Off" de Pâques

Le dimanche de Pâques 2014, des œufs "OFF" ont été cachés dans les différents districts du canton de Fribourg (Suisse).
Chaque œuf était noir, de 20 centimètres, estampillé du signe OFF, et contenait des instructions pour participer à un tirage au sort permettant de gagner divers prix.
Grâce à cette action, le canton de Fribourg, en collaboration avec les offices du tourisme, poursuivait sa campagne d’économie d’électricité lancée en octobre.
