« I’m frightened of eggs, worse than frightened, they revolt me. That white round thing without any holes... have you ever seen anything more revolting than an egg yolk breaking and spilling its yellow liquid ? Blood is jolly, red. But egg yolk is yellow, revolting. I’ve never tasted it. »
Alfred Hitchcock had an extreme fear of eggs (also known as ovophobia).
In order to witness his disdain for eggs, watch for the scene in which actress Jessie Royce Landis (Francie’s mom) squashes her cigarette in the yolk of a fried egg (40'50), in the film "To Catch a Thief ".
In another scene (11'30), one of the cookers splashes what looks to be an egg towards Cary Grant's face (protected by a window).
While filming "The Birds" (1963), the actress Suzanne Pleshette recalled a berating she received from Hitchcock's assistant : she said « Don't put your cigarette out in your eggs ».
Pleshette said « He hates eggs, he hates cigarettes, and frankly, he hates you. »
