Chicks in Egg Ballet

A costume sketch of canary chicks for the ballet Trilby by Yuli Gerber (1870), proposed by Viktor Hartmann.

It inspired Modest Mussorgsky for his Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks from The Pictures at the Exhibition, best known through an orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel.
The exhibition catalogue described the sketch : “Canary chicks, enclosed in eggs as in suits of armor. Instead of headdress, canary heads put on like helmets down to the neck.”
