The 9 Minute Egg

After years of diligent honing of your puzzle-solving skills, you are finally rewarded with a position at the presitious Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. Unfortunately, it is as a cook, but you have to start somewhere.
One December morning after a particularly heavy snow storm, the power fails. Fortunately, there is still an old wood stove with which you can prepare most of the professors' breakfasts. However one eccentric Mathematics professor with a great deal of power and influence at the institute has a peculiar breakfast item which now poses a problem. He likes a single egg boiled for exactly nine minutes.
You aren't wearing your watch, and all the clocks in the building are electric. You are able to find two exquisite hourglasses, able to pricely measure in hand-crafted swiss sand seven and four minutes, respectively.
How quickly using only these two hourglasses can you provide the professor with his egg?

Milk, butter, eggs, and cheese were not always and everywhere uniformly permitted or prohibited by the Church.
Butter having been declared lawful by the Church, a claim was put in for eggs, and Pope Julius III granted this dispensation to all Christendom, although certain private churches did not at once choose to profit by this favour.
It is to the prohibition of eggs in Lent that the origin of "Easter eggs" must be traced. These were hardened by boiling them in a madder bath, and were brought to receive the blessing of the priest on Good Friday, and were then eaten on the following Sunday as a sign of rejoicing.

This is the dramatic story of a local Egg. The egg was young. It didn't know much. We tried to tell it, but of course it didn't listen. If only it had waited ... This is the story of the Egg that wanted to fly. The Egg loved the sky. It saw all the birds, insects, aeroplanes, balloons, helicopters, bats and clouds. It dreamed of being high up there, flying with them all. So the Egg went to a very high place... and jumped...

Take Refuge In An Eggshell

L’Œuf Noir

L’Œuf noir et autres contes fantaisistes
Luigi Capuana (1839 - 1915)
Ed.
